Which Appropriate Body should I choose?
From September 2024, local authorities stopped operating as appropriate bodies and teaching school hubs have become the main provider of appropriate body services. Schools are encouraged to choose their local teaching school hub for appropriate body services unless they have specific reasons to go elsewhere. For schools in Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow, Teach West London is your local Teaching School Hub. Teach West London worked in collaboration with local authority appropriate body teams to ensure a smooth transition for schools.
What is the role of the Appropriate Body?
Through quality assurance, the appropriate body assures itself that: relevant persons are aware of, and are capable of, meeting their responsibilities for monitoring support and assessment during teacher induction AND that monitoring, support, assessment and guidance procedures in place are fair and appropriate. Appropriate bodies also provide data to the DfE to record the progress of persons who start, and complete, induction.
We have a new ECT who has already completed several terms of their Statutory Induction, should they be registered with Teach West London?
In order for an ECT to continue with their induction a headteacher / principle must register with an Appropriate Body in advance of an ECT taking up the post. Failure to do so may delay the continuation of induction. The headteacher is expected to obtain interim assessments, any formal assessment and progress reviews from the ECT’s previous post before they take up post. The appropriate body will need to see copies of these reports before the registration can be authorised. Where there have been concerns about an ECTs progress in a previous post you should ensure appropriate support is put in place from the start.

Do you provide training for ECT mentors?
If you have chosen a ‘provider-led’ ECT programme, your ECT mentors will receive training through your chosen Delivery Partner and Lead provider. Please contact your delivery partner for information on what training and support your mentors can receive. As an Appropriate Body, we train induction tutors in how to lead your mentors. Click here for information on upcoming induction tutor training events.
If you have chosen a ‘school-led’ ECT programme, it is the responsibility of your school to provide training to mentors on your ‘school-led’ programme. As an Appropriate Body, we will visit your school to quality assure your school-led programme and will require you to provide information on how you are supporting and training your mentors.
