All Teach West London's initial teacher training (ITT) courses for Primary and Secondary phases lead to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

All our ITT courses are full time and for post-graduate entry into teaching (therefore applicants will either need to be in the final year of their undergraduate degree or have already graduated). See Who can teach? for entry requirements.

Teach West London offers two routes into teaching:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

or

  • QTS + Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

All of Teach West London’s ITT courses lead to QTS. QTS is a legal requirement to teach in maintained primary, secondary and special schools in England.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

Teach West London has partnered with St Mary’s University to offer the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education). This amounts to 60 master's level credits, which is equivalent to one third of an MA and can be added to subsequently.

You have the option of applying for QTS only courses or QTS & PGCE courses, if you meet the requirements for the PGCE.

Course structure

QTS Only: Throughout the year our trainee teachers spend four days a week in school and one day a week engaging in professional learning with Teach West London. This will be based on Teach West London’s ITT curriculum.

QTS & PGCE: Same as above, plus trainees who have opted to take the PGCE will have an additional assessment and will be taught by ITT specialists from St Mary’s University for a total of 5 days throughout the course. The PGCE is an academic qualification but is not a requirement for becoming a teacher.

Salaried

Salaried courses are most suited to applicants who are already working as unqualified teachers or teaching assistants or applicants who have at least 3 years of relevant work experience. If you pursue a salaried route, you will be employed by a school and will have responsibility for planning, teaching and assessing independently from the start of your training programme. Your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) fees maybe paid by the employing school where DfE salaried grant funding is available or you may be required to pay the QTS fee. If your employing school pay the QTS fees and you opt for the QTS & PGCE route, you may be required to pay the PGCE fees.

Non-Salaried (fee funded)

If you choose a non-salaried route, you will pay course fees and will not earn a salary whilst training to teach. You will have a gradual, more supported training experience, building up to a fuller timetable of independent teaching by the end of the year.

Applicants can apply for a student loan, even if they have already had one for other postgraduate training. In addition, Applicants may also be eligible for a scholarship or bursary to train to teach certain secondary subjects.

All of Teach West London’s courses are offered on the non-salaried (fee-funded) pathway. Some courses will also be offered on the salaried pathway. All courses are subject to the vacancies that our placement schools offer and are subject to change as placements and positions are taken.

Our ITT provider code is 1KV (Teach West London Teaching School Hub).

Throughout the year, a trainee teacher’s progress in terms of knowledge, understanding and application, will be assessed based on our ITT curriculum, which meets and exceeds the requirements of the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework. Ongoing formative assessment will be carried out by each mentor at the placement school.

This will be in the form of lesson observations, target setting, professional dialogue, reflections etc. Each trainee teachers’ progress will be tracked through 5 formative assessment points during the year. The final assessment will be based on the Teachers’ Standards, which will be assessed by both the school mentor and Teach West London staff.

It takes one academic year to complete Teach West London's ITT course.

All Teach West London's ITT courses begin in late August/early September (depends on the first day of the academic year in your placement school) and finish the following July. For example, September 2026 – July 2027. (Please note that two compulsory induction days will take place in July, before the start of the course).
